Mtskheta is the ancient capital of the state of Iberia, which existed in the 4th century. It is believed that this city is about a century older than the current capital of Georgia, Tbilisi. Mtskheta is a “must see” point for any tour of Georgia.
The city is located a few kilometers north of Tbilisi, in a picturesque valley, at the confluence (also called “wedding”) of two rivers – Aragvi and Kura. Perhaps that is why, from ancient times to this day, Mtskheta has been considered a very suitable place for a strong and happy marriage.

Your ceremony can take place in a symbolic place – a small hill at the “wedding” of two Caucasian rivers – Aragvi and Kura (the Georgian name of the river is Mtkvari). From here, a picturesque view of the surrounding mountains, Mtskheta and the ancient monastery of Jvari on the mountain opens up.

Documents for a wedding in Georgia:
- Valid passports
- Certificate of marital status, i.e. whether he/she is single, divorced or widowed, issued by an official authority of his/her country.
- The above certificate is valid for 3 months from the date of issue.
- It is also necessary to legalize the certificate of marital status. The best form of legalization is an apostille stamp if their country has signed the “Hague Convention Abolishing Requirements for the Legalization of Foreign Public Documents of October 5, 1961.” Otherwise, he/she will need to contact the official authority of his/her country for the necessary legalization.
- The original divorce document, in the case of a divorced person, which states that the divorce is final and not subject to appeal, duly signed, stamped and legalized.
- Death certificate of the spouse, in case he/she was married, but his/her spouse died. The certificate must be legalized.
- Certificate of change of name/surname.
